Chapter 6
Madeleine began directing the household staff. “Go out and catch some bugs—cockroaches, moths, or caterpillars. The more, the better.”
“And mice, live ones. Evangeline is terrified of them,” Brandon added.
Evangeline’s body trembled, and fragments of lost memories flooded back.
In the past, whenever the original Evangeline defied Madeleine or Brandon, they would relentlessly scold and hit her. Then, they would bring all kinds of disgusting creatures and force them into her mouth.
After enduring such cruelty, the original Evangeline would comply with their every whim.
It was unimaginable that such cruel, biased parents existed in the world.
The household staff replied awkwardly, “The house is clean. It’s hard to find those things right now.”
Joseph waved his hand dismissively. “Find them outdoors, then. It doesn’t matter how much trouble it takes.”
Evelyn, her eyes gleaming with malicious delight, snuggled up to Joseph. “You’re the best, Joseph.”
The group before Evangeline seemed united in their scheming, all sharing the same ill intent.
She suddenly realized that there was no need for her to continue this charade. The script, originally based on her and Joseph’s relationship, was no longer relevant.
She could no longer deceive herself. Even with Joseph’s affection points at 99, she was still nothing but a disposable stand-in.
Their love story had already fallen apart. She no longer needed a script with a bad ending or an unworthy man.
She had been fighting alone in this world for far too long. Rather than enduring endless suffering and being coerced into submission, it was better to let go now.
“I agree,” Evangeline said.
It should have been a moment of joy for everyone, yet Evelyn still felt unsatisfied.
“Eva, you said earlier that the script was like your baby, but you’re so easily giving it up now? Are you hiding something?”
Joseph also warned, “You’d better speak up now. Don’t resort to any underhanded tactics.”
They were truly going too far.
As Evangeline thought of the divorce papers she hadn’t had the chance to have Joseph sign, a thought crossed her mind.
“Of course, I have conditions. If you want my hard work, then let’s make an exchange.”
She quickly listed several properties, then turned to Joseph. “You care so much for my dear sister. Surely, you wouldn’t mind using these to get the script she likes, right?”
Her words successfully silenced any hesitation Joseph had. “Of course, I don’t mind. Anything that can be solved with money isn’t a problem.”
Joseph made a call, and soon, Antoine arrived with a thick stack of transfer agreements.
Evangeline took the papers. While receiving them, she slipped the divorce papers into the pile.
As Joseph was about to sign, Evelyn suddenly felt bad for him. “Joseph, spending so much money on a script isn’t worth it.”
She didn’t actually have the script evaluated; she was simply used to taking everything from Evangeline.
But Joseph didn’t hesitate. Without batting an eye, he let go of hundreds of millions in assets.
Had she known the cost would be so high, she might not have tried to steal it.
However, Joseph misunderstood. He reached out to gently tap Evelyn’s nose. “Silly, of course, it’s worth it. If it makes you happy, it’s worth everything.”
He began signing the agreements, one by one.
As he neared the divorce papers, Evangeline’s heart skipped a beat.
Just then, Joseph paused and lifted his head.
When he saw her nervous expression, that unfamiliar feeling returned, accompanied by a strange sense of panic.
It was as if signing the papers would make him lose something precious.
He turned a page, instinctively glancing over the contents.
