Chapter 40
“If you don’t want to go in, you can just wait outside,” Caleb said to Yasmin when they reached the door.
Why Yasmin Lifted her head to look at Caleb She asked, “Mr. Grant Senior said you’re trying to protect me. Is that true?”
Caleb parsed his Eps, not saying a word. Yasmin looked at the loft’s door and laughed batterly “Your mother doesn’t approve of me. I have no right to see her ”
He frowned “Yasmin, you’re my legal wide. You don’t need her approval. You don’t have to put up with her.””
“Let’s go.” Yasmin simple lifted the hem at her skirt and stepped inside. If she didn’t go in, Corine would most likely send someone to “escort” her in.
Inside, Corine was dressed in a long white satin gown. To her right was a black and white memorial portrait. She stared blankly at it, seemingly lost in thought.
Her features were well–defined yet soft. She was the definition of a refined lady. Nevertheless, despite her beauty, there was an undeniable sense of emptiness about her
“Mom,” Caleb greeted in a cold voice
“Hello, Mrs. Grant.” Yasmin tried her best to remain calm.
“You’re here” Corine tamed her head, glancing first at Caleb and then at Yasmin. She asked with a blank expression, “Have you paid your respects to Jacob?
“Not vet.” Before Yasmin could answer, Caleb stepped forward and shielded her behind him. “We’re planning to visit him in the afternoon.”
Yasmin looked at Caleb in surprise. How did he know that she always paid her respects to Jacob in the afternoon?
Jacob was Caleb’s biological brother who had been frail and sickly since young. Four years ago, after being diagnosed as untreatable, he passed away.
Meanwhile, Caleb had been exceptionally bright since a young age. However, his parents, Damon and Corine, had been so busy taking care of the sick Jacob that Benjamin bad to take Caleb under his wing and raise him on his own.
Meanwhile, Jacob grew up under Damon and Corine’s care, receiving all their love and attention. As a result, Corine always favored Jacob and placed him above all.
“Caleb, I’m speaking to Yasmin Shut your mouth!” Corine’s gaze instantly hardened, and she tried to push Caleb away, However, he wouldn’t budge and stood firmly in front of
Yasmin
“Mrs Grant, I—“Yasmin had just opened her mouth to speak when Corine interrupted her.
“Yasmin, have you forgotten how well my son treated you when he was alive? Now, he’s left all alone, yet you didn’t even rush to see him the moment you came back. What the hell are you waiting for? Have you forgotten who was there when you were a child? Have you forgotten who was the one who got you out of the psychiatric hospital? It was my son! How can you be so ungrateful?
Yasmin’s face turned pale. She had grown up in Glenfield, but because her father was from Dunville, she would spend most of her long holidays there with him. Therefore, het Glendish wasn’t fluent, and she would often get made fun of by the other kids.
In the beginning. Jacob was the only one willing to play with ber.
When Veronica injured her hand, the Whitmore family used it as an excuse to declare Yasmin as mentally unstable and sent her to a psychiatric hospital at just 16 years old. It was Jacob, who was on his deathbed, who had pleaded with her family to get her out and let her live a normal life.
Yasmin knew that if it had not been for Jacob’s dying wish, Benjamin would have never gone to negotiate with her family.
“Mom, I’m your son too.” Caleb completely shielded Yasmin behind him, has voice growing cold. Corine glared at him, and without any warning, she stood up and raised her hand
to deliver a strike.
“Caleb!” Yasmin was quick to react and immediately pulled Caleb to the side. In a flash, Caleb swiftly wrapped Yasmin in his arms and spun around.
Corine’s slap Landed straight on Caleb’s back. Yasmin’s heart clenched Caleb had held her so tightly that all she could see was his white shirt, and all she could hear was the steady
beat of his heart.
