Chapter 18
Since Sullivan had entered the Emerson residence, Isabel wasn’t going to allow herself to be left behind. She followed right behind him. Panicked, the maid tried to stop them, to no avail.
The living room door flew open, and Adeline instinctively looked over, only to see Sullivan and Isabel loolding at her.
Meanwhile, the moment Isabel saw Adeline’s face, she couldn’t resist exclaiming in shock, “You’re not dead!”
However, she was immediately filled with rage.
She knew it! This was Madeleine’s real goal, wasn’t it? She pretended to set her up with Sullivan to keep her appeased. Then, she faked her death to secure her place in Sullivan’s heart. She had merely waited for the right opportunity to come back and steal Sullivan for good.
Isabel could barely contain the vicious resentment in her eyes as she glowered at Adeline. Naturally, Frank and Cynthia noticed her gaze and frowned.
The maid finally caught up to the two of them. Panting, she quickly apologized, “Sir, ma’am, they barged right in before I could stop them…”
Cynttua dismissed the maid with a wave.
Exhaling in reliet, the maid quickly left the living room.
As soon as the door closed, Adeline eyed Sullivan and Isabel as she said in displeasure, “My, my. You two sure know how to make a grand entrance! May I know the reason why you two are trespassing on private property, Mr. Carter and Ms. Koch?”
Sullivan knew he was being rude, but he knew that if he waited until the maid sought permission from the Emersons, he wouldn’t be able to see her. Therefore, he apologized, “I’m sorry, Maddie. I just wanted to talk to you. I didn’t mean anything else by it.”
After explaining his presence, he was reminded of Isabel, who had tailed him the entire way, and started rubbing his forehead in frustration. He never realized just bow hard it was to get rid of Isabel. She clung to him wherever he went!
Turning to Isabel with an annoyed expression, he snapped, “Why do you keep following me around? Don’t you have anything better to do?”
Isabel immediately felt hurt that he was once again pushing her aside. She merely loved him too much and was too afraid of losing him. Why wouldn’t he even let ber follow him around? They had known each other since they were children! Plus, hadn’t he always had feelings for her?
Still, to avoid causing Sullivan to despise her even more, she chose to leave the living room. However, she didn’t leave the Emerson residence. She paced at the door, waiting for Sullivan to finish his conversation with the Emersons. She kept her eyes peeled, wanting to see him as soon as he came out.
Inside the living room, Frank and Cynthia exchanged looks before eyeing Adeline and Sullivan, who were both staring at each other. Neither one spoke. In the end, It was Frank who cleared his throat to cut the tension in the alı
“We’ve got things to do, so we’re heading upstairs. You two should sit down and have a proper c conversation. Don’t just get into fights and arguments.” Without waiting for a re
a response, Frank and Cynthia both went up the stairs, leaving Adeline and Sullivan alone in the living room.
Following a prolonged silence, Sullivan finally said, “Maddie.”
However, Adeline cut him off immediately, saying, “Whatever you have to say, just say it. I paid you to be my boyfriend, and you always treated me coldly. Well, the agreement has ended, and we’re no longer in a relationship. I don’t think you’re in the position to address me by my nickname.
“Moreover, Madeleine Emerson is dead. The person in front of you now is Adeline Monroe, the Emersons‘ adopted daughter.”
