Chapter 161 I Won’t Be a Third Wheel
Older Mr. Hart’s sudden action shocked Sofia Schneider.
She had never seen him so angry before. Her heart warmed instantly, realizing he was standing up for her.
Benson Schneider, who hadn’t been hit since he turned twenty, was humiliated and enraged by being struck at his age.
Now he was even more furious.
He yelled at Older Mr. Hart, “I’m disciplining my granddaughter. What’s it to you?!”
Older Mr. Hart roared back even louder, “I’m protecting my daughter–in–law. You got a problem with that?”
If the situation weren’t so tense, Sofia would have thought these two old men were just….

Too childish.
Their bickering skills were worse than elementary school kids.
Despite the absurdity, Sofia felt deeply touched by Older Mr. Hart’s protective stance.
Except for her mentor, no elder had ever defended her like this.
Older Mr. Hart pulled Sofia close, glaring at Benson. “Benson Schneider, I’m telling you, this is the Hart family. If you want to bully Sofia, you have to go through me first!”
Benson was stunned to see how much the Hart family valued Sofia,
He had always thought that marrying her off to the Hart family would be a miserable fate, especially since Nathaniel Hart was paralyzed and wouldn’t have children, meaning the Hart fortune would never come their way.
Benson had believed Sofia would suffer in the Hart family.
But seeing how they pro
her, he regretted his decision.

Any of his other granddaughters would have ensured the Hart family’s wealth flowed back to the Schneider family.
Realizing he couldn’t benefit from Sofia now, Benson threw one last angry remark at her before storming off.
Sofia helped Older Mr. Hart sit down, apologizing, “I’m sorry, Grandpa, it’s my fault for causing trouble.”
Older Mr. Hart immediately frowned, “Sofia, what are you saying? Do you not consider me family?”
Sofia quickly softened her tone, “Grandpa, don’t misunderstand. I just didn’t want you to worry.”
She could handle these issues on her own, but involving Older Mr. Hart was different.
Sofia didn’t like that feeling; it made her very angry.
Older Mr. Hart said, “Sofia, since you married Nathaniel, you’re my daughter–in–law, and that makes you my child. No elder would ignore their child’s troubles. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of Benson for you.”
Sofia felt even more emotional. She knew Older Mr. Hart valued her so highly mainly because she had healed Nathaniel.
She said, “Grandpa, please let me handle this. If I can’t manage it one day, I’ll ask for your help, okay?”
She still didn’t want Older Mr. Hart involved.
He had been retired for a long time, and getting involved now would make people think Nathaniel was useless and that the younger Hart family members couldn’t handle things
on their own.
Older Mr. Hart, seeing Sofia’s determination, guessed her thoughts and felt bittersweet.
This daughter–in–law was too good, always thinking of the Hart family and giving so much.
He said, “Sofia, I know what you’re worried about. Thank you for being so thoughtful. But I don’t want to see you suffer. If the Schneider family treats you badly, cut ties with them.”

Sofia swallowed hard, saying, “Grandpa, I’m not even a Schneider by blood. There’s no tie
to cut.”
Older Mr. Hart didn’t seem surprised, which shocked Sofia.
She watched his expression closely, realizing he knew something but wouldn’t tell her.
She decided not to press him and continued, “Grandpa, I’ve never been related to the Schneider family, but I don’t know where I come from. Would you still accept me?”
“Of course,” Older Mr. Hart said immediately.
“Sofia, I like you because you’re you, not because of where you come from or whose daughter you are.”
Sofia smiled, reassured. She was even more certain now that Older Mr. Hart knew more but wasn’t ready to share.
At least not now.
She realized that his willingness to have her marry Nathaniel was likely connected to her background.
This thought intrigued her.
Older Mr. Hart, noticing Sofia didn’t push for more answers, sighed in relief and changed the subject. “Sofia, how is Nathaniel? When will he come back?”
Sofia saw his eagerness and said, “Grandpa, why don’t we visit Mr. Hart now?”
Older Mr. Hart jumped at the idea, “Great! Let’s go.”
He stood up quickly, ready to leave.
Sofia had kept Nathaniel away recently to find the person who hurt him, and Older Mr. Hart feared exposing anything, so he hadn’t visited Nathaniel either.
This separation was hard on him.
Sofia began to doubt her decision, wondering if she was wrong to keep Nathaniel hidden.
She helped Older Mr. Hart, saying, “Grandpa, you don’t have to be so cautious. Visit Mr. Hart whenever you want. I won’t let anything happen to him again.”

Older Mr. Hart said, “Sofia, you’ve done so much for Nathaniel. I can’t help much, so the least I can do is not add to your burdens.”
Sofia didn’t argue further. If that’s how Older Mr. Hart felt, she wouldn’t insist.
She just needed to catch theperson quickly so Nathaniel could come home.
However, the person behind everything had been very patient, with no signs of activity yet.
Sofia had ruled out Kyler Johnston, having investigated his background thoroughly.
He was clean and had no grudge against Nathaniel, showing loyalty through his actions.
With Kyler cleared, Sofia was back to square one, deeply resenting the hidden enemy.
She vowed to personally punish the person once caught, to quell her burning–anger.
In the car, Sofia said, “Grandpa, should I bring Mr. Hart back?”
Older Mr. Hart longed for Nathaniel and Sofia to move back so he could see them every day and enjoy Sofia’s cooking.
But he wasn’t a selfish old man.
He said, “No, you two enjoy your time together. I won’t be a third wheel.”
