Chapter 94: Two Men
“Oh my God, why are there so many people here? What happened?”
While the situation was still unresolved, another surprised voice interrupted, turning
everyone’s heads to find it was a lifeguard. Ideally, lifeguards should be present on the beach, ready to handle any issues.
But he arrived late, completely unaware of what was happening around him. What would happen if something else went wrong?
The instructor’s face darkened, and he nearly lost his temper. With so many people present, he held back his anger and demanded to know where the lifeguard had been and why he hadn’t shown up until now.
“Where have you been?”
The lifeguard blinked, looking confused. “I had an upset stomach and went to the restroom. I was gone for just a few minutes. What’s going on? Did something happen?”
“You went to the restroom for a few minutes, and you think that’s acceptable? Shouldn’t you have arranged for someone to cover for you? If something had happened while you were gone, who would be responsible?”
Mia was furious; incidents like this shouldn’t occur without a lifeguard present, especially since no one else was there when Chloe needed help.
Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been Mia who first noticed Chloe’s distress but the rescue personnel on the beach.
“When my friend had her accident, she tried to contact you for help, but there was no response. Don’t tell me you were completely unaware! I have reason to believe you knew but chose to ignore it!”
Mia was about to explode. The lifeguard’s nonchalant attitude was infuriating, especially given the importance of the diving area. The equipment had failed, yet he showed no concern. Hearing Mia’s accusation, the lifeguard shrugged dismissively. “That’s not fair! It’s my job to be vigilant, but is there a rule against using the restroom? If I didn’t have time for a proper handoff, what’s the big deal? Accidents on the beach are common; when you come here, you need to be prepared for risks. Look, your friend seems fine now.”
Everyone was outraged by his comments.
Chloe could sense Mia was about to lose it. She quickly grabbed Mia’s hand but then sneezed.
They weren’t foolish; it was clear that both the instructor and the lifeguard were trying to shift blame. If accountability were pursued, it could lead to serious trouble.

However, the priority should be getting Chloe to the hospital, as her well–being was the most important issue.
Once Chloe was admitted, Mia insisted to the doctor that her hand needed a thorough
examination due to the accident.
Fortunately, the results showed it was just a bruise and there were no broken bones, so it wasn’t serious–just a need for rest.
Even though Chloe was okay, Mia wasn’t ready to let the matter go. She sought out the person in charge to address the issue.
Despite Chloe’s recovery, accountability needed to be established. If the instructor and
lifeguard had shown a better attitude, Mia wouldn’t have felt compelled to escalate matters.
To her surprise, while the person in charge was polite, he continued to deflect responsibility.
He was adamant about denying any fault.
Mia wasn’t shocked by his reaction–no one wanted to take on such heavy responsibility. However, his attitude was frustrating.
Instead of focusing on resolving the situation, they seemed more concerned with avoiding blame, which was unacceptable to her.
Mia hesitated to make the call inside the room, worried it would upset Chloe, so she stepped outside. Her voice was a bit agitated, and Julian happened to overhear.
After listening for a while and understanding the situation, Julian felt a wave of dread. He hadn’t been there when Chloe had her accident, and now he felt a mix of relief and fear- thankfully, she was okay, but if something had gone wrong, it would have been unthinkable.
He knew that Chloe wasn’t as brave as she seemed; she could be timid, even frightened by the thunder outside.
Finally, mustering the courage to try diving, she faced this ordeal, which could leave her with lasting trauma.
As he was contemplating his next move, he saw Chloe walking out of the room, and surprisingly, Daniel was with her.
He didn’t know when those two had gotten together, and now he had no chance to speak up. He felt his frustration boiling inside.
Suppressing his emotions, he approached them.
“Chloe, are you okay? I heard about the incident on the phone. It was so dangerous! I’m g’d you’re not seriously hurt. I know a hospital nearby; let me take you for a checkup to make sure everything’s alright.”

Daniel rolled his eyes at Julian’s comment. “If you’re not going to use those eyes, you might as well donate them to someone who will! Can’t you see she has a medical report in hand? She just got back from the hospital–there’s no need to go again. Right now, she needs rest, not more hassle. Do you understand?”
After saying this, he couldn’t help but add a mocking tone. “You really have been coddled too much; you don’t even know how to care for someone. If you’re clueless, maybe you should just keep quiet to avoid sounding ridiculous.”
