Chapter 100: Not Using Your Brain
Daniel held back his emotions, determined not to let them affect what he had to say. He looked at Julian seriously. “Are you really not seeing how strange everything that happened yesterday was? If it were just one coincidence, fine. But everything happened together–don’t you think something feels off? Someone is clearly targeting Chloe.”
Julian squinted, trying to think rationally. “What do you mean by that?”
“What else could I mean? I’m just making a reasonable guess. If you think it’s unfounded, go investigate yourself. But this possibility exists,” Daniel replied, sensing Julian’s skepticism.
To Julian, it felt like they were rivals. But for Daniel, even if they were both pursuing Chloe, their priority should be her safety.
Yet, instead of making Julian take the matter seriously, Daniel’s words only irritated him
further.
“I know what you’re implying. Don’t think you’re the only one helping Chloe; I’ve investigated too. The security footage shows it was just an accident. Whether it was a shark or something else, it was all just a coincidence. If you don’t believe me, check the footage yourself. If there were any signs of foul play, I wouldn’t be standing here calmly discussing it with you.”
Julian’s eyes held a hint of sarcasm as he continued, “You need to realize not everyone thinks like you, always assuming the worst about others. It’s disgusting to see you use any means necessary to achieve your goals.”
Julian understood Daniel’s underlying accusation. He had acted after the incident, reviewing all the surveillance footage and finding no signs of tampering. It was truly just an accident.
He couldn’t grasp why Daniel kept pursuing this. After all, Chloe hadn’t said anything suspicious, so why dwell on it?
Hearing Julian’s dismissal, Daniel frowned. “Can you let me finish? Don’t interrupt. I know what I’m saying…”
“Enough! I’m warning you; it seems you’re just trying to win Chloe’s favor with this nonsense. But regardless of what’s going on, don’t think your twisted logic applies to others. Also, keep your distance from Chloe. If you get any closer, don’t blame me for being unfriendly. We’ve known each other for years, and while I won’t do anything drastic, I’m not going to stand by idly either.”
With that, Julian turned and walked away, leaving no room for Daniel to respond.
Watching him leave, Daniel furrowed his brow.
Julian’s reaction was overly intense. Did he sense something, or was he oblivious? Did he even
suspect Layla at all?
Daniel couldn’t understand whether Julian’s actions were based on suspicion, but regardless, he wouldn’t stop what he had to do.
Meanwhile, Layla stood anxiously in place, worried. She had noticed Daniel giving her a meaningful look when he called Julian away.
She sensed that Daniel was starting to suspect her, and the thought made her anxious. She couldn’t leave; she had to wait for Julian.
She needed to see him first to gauge his mood.
When she spotted Julian approaching, her face lit up with a smile, and she hurried to greet him.
“Darling, you finally made it! I’ve been waiting for you. What did you have to discuss with him? Couldn’t you wait until after lunch? It’s so uncomfortable to be hungry!”
The more she spoke, the more aggrieved she sounded.
Julian glanced down at her hand on his wrist, his expression darkening slightly. Yet he didn’t say anything or pull away.
No wonder Daniel had called him away; it was clearly to prevent him from sitting with Chloe during lunch. He hadn’t even found out where Chloe was dining.
If he went to the wrong place, he’d have no excuse to find her.
The thought made him uncomfortable; Daniel’s chat was merely a delay tactic.
During her stay, Chloe had felt an unprecedented sense of relaxation in this tourist area, meeting people from all over, each with different languages, yet everyone relaxed and socialized freely.
As she finished breakfast and stepped outside, she encountered a woman from another
country.
With striking highlights and distinctive dreadlocks, the woman stood out in the crowd. As their eyes met, she flashed Chloe a bright smile and blew a kiss.
Chloe chuckled at the boldness, responding with a nod. Though she wasn’t one to openly express her emotions like that, she always appreciated the kindness from strangers.
However, the intense enthusiasm was a bit overwhelming.
Just then, Mia approached, noticing Chloe staring intently at something. Curious, she looked in the same direction but saw nothing special.
