Chapter 59
As soon as Emma finished speaking, the conference room fell into a brief silence.
But it wasn’t long before someone scoffed. “Miss, people should stick to jobs that match their skills. You think you’re qualified to be the executive CEO? What a joke. Since when did Summerton Group start hiring people based on their appearance? I think you’d be better off at the front desk.”
His tone was filled with ridicule, making Emma sound utterly incompetent.
“Front desk? No way. If the higher–ups at Summerton Group found out, they’d be heartbroken,” another man chimed in.
Discrimination against women in the workplace had always existed.
Yet Emma wasn’t angered by their provocations. Instead, she looked at them with indifference, her expression calm and unaffected.
She pulled out her resume and tossed it on the table.
“Only incompetent men feel threatened by a female superior. In my world, everything is based on capability, not gender. You men love to say that women are weak, but behind closed doors, you’ll do anything to please them. Pretty ironic, don’t you think?”
Her words hit the man right in his sore spot.
The man’s face twisted in embarrassment. He thought of the woman he had been pursuing for six months. He had even gone as far as spending a hundred thousand dollars on her, yet he hadn’t even held her hand.
Just yesterday, he had seen her Instagram story, and she had been in a hotel with someone else.
Meanwhile, the other employees curiously glanced at Emma’s resume.
When they saw that she had successfully led a major project for William Enterprises during her time abroad–a project that was still generating massive profits today–their expressions shifted. They collectively drew in a deep breath, not daring to underestimate her anymore.
Her resume itself was enough to shut them all up.
Emma wasn’t interested in further explanations. She simply took her seat and started reviewing the company’s data.
Some employees, still unwilling to accept her, deliberately threw out complex industry jargon in hopes of tripping her up.
Much to their surprise, Emma answered each challenge effortlessly, even providing more efficient and professional solutions.
By the end of the meeting, no one dared to make jokes about her anymore.
In fact, they realized that this seemingly calm and gentle woman was no pushover. And when it came to running a company, she was meticulous and highly capable.
When Emma returned to the secretarial department, she found the employees lounging around, eating snacks, and chatting casually. Even when they saw her walk in, they showed no fear and only half–heartedly hid their snacks and pretended to work
But just as she passed by, she casually dropped a single line.
“Finish your snacks, and you can pack your things.”
The secretarial team froze in shock.
One of the women stood up and shouted at Emma’s back, “What did you say? Are you firing us?”
Emma turned around and shot her an icy gaze. “Is that a problem? This is a new company, and while our workload is still rather low, it’ll slowly ramp up. But with this kind of attitude, I doubt you’ll be a good fit. If you leave now, you’ll still have time to find another job before the holidays.”
With that, Emma gave them no chance to argue and went straight into the CEO’s office.
The secretaries looked at each other, their faces burning with humiliation.
“Let’s see if she can handle everything on her own after we leave!”
After the HR department approved their resignation, the HR director couldn’t help but pay Emma a visit. “M–Ms. Dyer…”
Emma looked up, her gaze cool. “What is it?”
“The three secretaries have all resigned. How will you manage without them? The secretary role is crucial.”
Emma nodded. “Post a job listing. I’ll personally handle the final interviews. That’s all.”
“But Ms. Dyer, the hiring process–from job posting to interviews to onboarding–will take at least a week. Even then, they still need to pass a probation period. If this delays company operations…”
Emma’s gaze remained firm. “I can handle it.”
