Chapter 56
Frank paused at the doorway of the ward, his expression darkening.
However, he didn’t hesitate for long. He pushed the door open and walked in. Just as Lea was about to vent her frustration, her expression immediately changed when she saw him. She looked up at him with a pitiful gaze.
“Frank, you’re finally back. I’m hurt… It hurts so much.” She reached out her hand, hoping to seek comfort in his embrace.
Frank swept a glance over her, but he didn’t see any visible injuries. In fact, her complexion was rosy, looking quite healthy.
“Where are you hurt?”
Hearing the indifference in his tone, Lea’s expression froze. In the past, whenever she was injured, Frank would never ask anything and would always rush to comfort her immediately.
Now, standing before her, it felt as if a massive chasm had opened between them. She was unable to accept this coldness from him!
Lea bit her lip and said, “I sprained my ankle.”
“And?”
Lea had no response.
Frank’s gaze sharpened with clear disapproval. “Lea, it’s just a sprained ankle. You should’ve just taken a few days off to rest at home. I have things to do. Next time, don’t call me for something minor like this.”
Just as he turned to leave, Lea’s composure finally cracked. She suddenly called out, her voice filled with frustration. “Frank, did you go looking for Emma?”
At the mention of Emma’s name, Lea’s hand, hidden beneath the blanket, clenched into a fist. Her nails dug deep into her palm.
Frank’s eyes narrowed slightly, his expression shifting. When he turned back to face Lea, his gaze was cold, and his voice carried an icy detachment. “Lea, if this bothers you, we can cancel the engagement.”
His reply, laced with clear boundaries, ripped Lea’s heart apart. Her face paled suddenly as she seemed to be on the verge of going berserk. Her heart raced uncontrollably, unable to calm down.
Was Frank telling her that it was over?
Her body swayed slightly as she struggled to compose herself. Lea swore to herself that she would never lose to some naive little girl. At this moment, she could only endure.
Taking a deep breath, she forced a weak smile and tried to reassure Frank. “Frank, I’ve told you before–Emma is just throwing a childish tantrum, trying to provoke you to get your attention.”
Once, Frank had thought the same. But two years had passed, and Emma seemed to be slowly forgetting him.
And that… he couldn’t accept.
There was a time when Lea’s words would have reassured him. As Emma’s elder, he couldn’t possibly lower himself to chase after her, so he had been waiting for her to come to him. He’d give her a chance to put her pride down
Noticing his lack of reaction, Lea’s mind raced. She had to act fast.
“Frank, if I stay by your side, maybe that’ll bring Emma back,” she said urgently. “We both know why she left in the first place. She couldn’t accept us being together, could she?”
Lea let out a soft, mocking laugh, her tearful gaze locking on Frank.
His heart clenched slightly as he stared at Lea. By the time he snapped out of his daze, a hint of guilt flickered through his eyes.
“Fine. : apologize for what I said earlier. I’ll handle the stalker issue. You should rest for the next couple of days.”
Although his tone had softened, Lea knew his heart was still set on Emma. But as long as there was even a sliver of hope, she would never give up.
